Infant Monitors (or baby monitors) are an invaluable aid for the modern busy parent. It should be stressed at the outset that these devices are most certainly not intended to be used as a substitute for actually checking on your baby – they simply allow a parent (or other guardian) to safely perform these checks from other rooms in the house when it may not be convenient for them to have their baby right by their side.
In many ways, infant monitors are really a natural progression of the nurturing instinct which generally begins during gestation. Pregnant women invariably take great care of themselves during the course of their pregnancy, aware that everything they do as part of their day to day lifestyle choices, including food, drink, and exercise, may have an effect on the baby growing within them. Such women generally take every precaution to avoid anything which may be detrimental to their unborn child. Nine long months later and the baby is born into this world. Upon seeing their helpless little child, a new parent’s protective instinct is usually invoked to the extent that they would do anything to prevent harm from coming to their child. Many such parents would gladly spend 24hrs a day watching over their baby if they only had the time. Unfortunately, the reality of life for most new parents involves them performing and juggling a variety of roles and responsibilities within the family which effectively makes a round the clock vigil over their baby a next to impossible feat. If only such new parents had a device which could still allow them to keep a careful check over their babies whilst at the same time allowing them a degree of flexibility in performing other tasks in other parts of the house….
This is the role infant monitors were designed to fulfill. These technological devices solve the dilemma for parents who wish to be productive around the house whilst maintaining their vigil over their child’s safety. At it’s most basic level, a baby monitor is simply a radio transmitter that releases a FM (Frequency Modulation) signal, usually between 48,830 – 48,890 MHZ. The transmitter is placed within a reasonable close proximity to the baby (often around 8 – 10 feet) whilst the receiver is designed to be portable and will be carried around the house by the parent (or the baby’s carer). Sounds from the baby are then transmitted via the transmitter to the receiver.
The monitor described is a basic one way audio model where the parent (receiver) can hear sounds coming from the baby (transmitter) but not the other way round. These audio baby monitors were the most common in the early days whilst this technology was still in it’s infancy. Today, however, not only can parents choose from two way baby monitors (ie the parent can talk back to their baby) – but there are also baby video monitors which allow the parent on the receiver’s end to visualise the baby. Some of the top end models even have sensors placed under the baby’s mattress which detects even the smallest movements, including the baby’s breathing. When no movement is detected for a span of around 20 seconds an alarm is triggered. clearly, these breathing monitors can play a vital role in overseeing the safety and wellbeing of your child.
No matter how busy life may become, it is perhaps at least comforting to know that there is a gadget available which can genuinely contribute to your peace of mind as well as the safety of your child. However, we recognize that with such a wide variety of choice of monitors available in the market today, new parents may find choosing the right monitor a somewhat confusing experience.
